OLYMPIC GAMES

 OLYMPICS GAMES:

What is Olympics?

The Modern Olympics Games are leading the international sport events which features summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of contestants participate in a variety of sports from all over the world. More than 200 nations participate in Olympic games. The Olympic games are held every FOUR years, with the summer and winter Olympics held alternatively, every two years in the four-year period.

Where were Olympics held for the first time?

The Olympic games were first held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The International Olympic committee (IOC) was founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, which leads to the first Modern games at ATHENS in 1896. The governing body of Olympic Movement is IOC, with the Olympic Charter defining its authority and structure.

The evolution of the Olympic has resulted in several changes during the 20th and the 21st centuries. Some of which includes Winter Olympic Games for Snow and Ice sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities, the Youth Olympic games for athletes aged 14 to 18, the five continental games (Pan American, African, Asian, European and Pacific), and the World Games for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The Deaflympics and Special Olympics are also endorsed by IOC.

What causes the Olympics to shift from Amateurism?

The very first question which hits our mind after reading this question is "What Amateurism is?" Amateurism is practicing of an activity, especially a sport, on an unpaid rather than a professional basis

The abuse of amateur rules by the Eastern Bloc nations prompted the IOC to shift away from pure Amateurism, as envisioned by Coubertin, to the acceptance of professional athletes, practicing at the games. The issue of  corporate sponsorship and general commercialization of the games  was created by the growing of mass media.

How many Olympics have been held so far?

There have been 28  Summer Olympic Games held in 23 cities, and 23 Winter Olympic Games held in 20 cities.
